Client Q&A: Most Common Skincare Questions I Hear

At HOUSE OF ESTHETICS, I’m all about education, empowerment, and customized care. Whether you’re visiting me for your first facial or your fifteenth, you probably have a few questions—so I thought I’d round up the ones I hear the most.

Let’s demystify skincare and help you feel confident in your routine and your treatment choices!

“What facial should I get for my skin type?”

Great question—and honestly, it depends! Your skin is always changing based on season, stress, hormones, and even sleep. That’s why I customize every facial at HOUSE OF ESTHETICS.

“How often should I get a facial?”

For most skin types, a facial every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal. That’s the length of a typical skin cell cycle, so regular treatments help keep your skin glowing, balanced, and healthy.

If you're targeting specific concerns (like acne, hyperpigmentation, or texture), I may recommend more frequent visits temporarily.

“Is SPF really that important—even on cloudy days?”

YES, 1000%! SPF is your skin’s best defense against:

  • Sun damage

  • Premature aging

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Skin cancer

Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays still reach your skin. Wear SPF 30+ daily—rain or shine—and reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.

“Can I use retinol and still get facials?”

Yes, but with a little caution. Retinol increases your skin’s sensitivity, so it’s best to pause use 3–5 days before and after a facial—especially if using exfoliating or using active ingredients.

Not sure? Just let me know you're using retinol when you book, and I’ll adjust your treatment accordingly.

“What products should I actually be using at home?”

You don’t need a 10-step routine. But you do need a few essentials:

  • Cleanser – Choose one that matches your skin type.

  • Toner (optional) – Balances pH and preps your skin.

  • Exfoliator – Use 1–2 times per week to remove dead skin cells and boost glow (opt for gentle chemical exfoliants like lactic or mandelic acid if you’re sensitive).

  • Serum – Targeted treatment (think vitamin C, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid).

  • Moisturizer – Locks in hydration and strengthens your barrier.

  • SPF – Non-negotiable!

I am happy to recommend medical-grade products tailored to your needs. Investing in the right products makes a big difference between “ok” skin and amazing skin.

“Is it normal to purge after a facial?”

Yes—but it depends on your skin and the type of facial. If we do extractions or use deep-cleansing treatments, your skin may push out impurities. This can result in small breakouts within a few days after your appointment.

Don't worry—it’s a good sign that your skin is detoxing. With regular care, this will reduce over time.

“Do I really need to double cleanse?”

If you wear sunscreen or makeup (which we hope you do), yes! The first cleanse removes surface buildup; the second actually cleans your skin.

A good oil-based cleanser or micellar water followed by a gentle foaming cleanser is a great routine to try.

“Is it ever too early to start anti-aging treatments?”

Nope! Prevention is always easier (and more effective) than correction. You can start using antioxidants and hydrating treatments in your 20s or early 30s. Treatments like LED therapy, facials, and gentle peels help preserve your skin's health and elasticity long-term.

Whether you’re just getting into skincare or want to level up your results, I’m here to answer your questions and tailor every experience to your unique skin. Education is part of my service—because great skin isn’t just about products or treatments. It’s about knowing what your skin needs and why.
